Zanzibar offers $1.7M to rename Dundas Station "Zanzibar Station"

Vihaan Bhatnagar

Toronto’s Club Zanzibar has offered to cover the $1.7 million cost for Dundas Station to be named after the club.

This comes one month after the Toronto city council directed the TTC Board to rename Dundas and Dundas West Station.

“We’d like to throw our hat in the ring along with TMU to rename Dundas,” said a spokesperson for Club Zanzibar in a statement.

“We’ve been here for over 60 years. We actually get more traffic than them and I think we deserve it just as much.”

Toronto City council declined to confirm whether they have made any decisions. The City did acknowledge that both Zanzibar and TMU have made offers.

Council also confirmed that TMU’s offer is largely financed via international student tuition. Zanzibar’s offer is comprised of a large number of coins and bills, including 18 loonies from the 2004 Summer Olympics and 32 toonies commemorating the War of 1812.
