TMU to hold classes in the PATH

Calan Pittis

According to a leaked internal memo Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) will begin holding classes in the PATH starting in the Winter 2025 term.

The PATH is an underground network of food and retail spaces beneath the core of downtown Toronto. The PATH is primarily used by those lost in Union Station as a way to find food and supplies, as well as individuals looking to keep out of the cold Toronto winters.

Student reaction to the letter has been mixed.

“I’ve already got classes in the Cineplex and in the Carlton,” said Ibrahim Collins, a second-year New Media student. “I’m only on campus once a week. If I get stuck in the PATH, I’m applying to U of T.”

Other students are more optimistic.

Samantha Lee, a graduate student in Early Childhood Studies, sees the path as a new opportunity for students like herself.

“I’ve been trapped in the PATH since I started at TMU in 2017, so it’s going to be really nice to actually get the chance to study here as well.”

The memo lays out the format of the classes that will be held in the PATH.

Beginning in January, students will receive classroom codes beginning with PTH. PTH 001 consists of the elevators between the Canadian Tire and Starbucks connected to the Ted Rogers building. PTH 002 and 004 have only been described as “you know that part of the PATH that's like a food court but smaller and all the shadows feel like they're creeping in towards you.” Classroom 003 was found at one point but has yet to be rediscovered.

The Abnormal School reached out to TMU’s head of classroom planning, David Corridor, for comment, but did not receive an answer in time for publication.
