TMU launches eight-year double-major program opportunities
Starting in the 2025-2026 school year, Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) will be allowing new applicants to complete two distinct undergraduate programs over the course of eight years.
“I’m incredibly indecisive. Now I can explore both my passions.” said TMU-hopeful, Jane Atrator. “My parents are paying for my education anyways.”
While the program is referred to as “double-degree”, students will only receive one undergraduate diploma at the end of the eight years. A Computer Engineering and Performance: Acting student will receive a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts-Engineering, whereas a Financial Mathematics and Chemistry student will receive a straightforward Bachelor’s of Science.
“The new degrees aren’t, technically, accepted by employers yet,” said TMU Board of Governors appointee, David Porter. “We hope that by the time the first class graduates, they will be.”
Outgoing high school graduates must apply for and be accepted into two programs. To graduate, they must complete every requirement of both programs. They will not be allowed to switch to a single-program model.
There will also be a mandatory class for students in the double degree program that will be offered once every seven years.
“Tuition will align with the fees for the higher-priced program,” said Joane McKee, Chief Financial Officer for TMU. “In the future, we may change it so the double-major students pay both in full.”
Perks of being a double-degree include access to the lounges and spaces of each program and having the opportunity to provide the school with more money.
