TMU Global Learning program offers new summer abroad opportunity in Gary, Indiana

Sarah Grishpul

Toronto Metropolitan University’s (TMU) Global Learning program has expanded its list of destinations to include Gary, Indiana.

“We want our students to broaden their horizons and experience the diverse culture, languages and history of different communities all around the world,” said TMU’s Global Learning Advisor, Ashley Ruffin,“which is why we felt that the city of Gary, Indiana was the perfect destination for our next summer learning program.”

Gary has been dubbed “America’s Most Miserable City” by locals and tourists alike. It has a population of around 60 thousand people and has been on a consistent decline since the 1990s.

Students will be shuttled in through an RV camper that the school has purchased through Motorhome Rentals. The trip will last a duration of five weeks and participants will be shacked up at Mosley Motel. Students are expected to pay for their own meals, for which there are several convenience stores and two-star diners in the vicinity.

“There’s lots for students to do and learn while on this exchange,” defends Ruffin. “Like visiting the Jackson family home. And, uh… other neat things like…um. Do kids still listen to Michael Jackson these days?”

After a quick Google search, she added that the itinerary would also include a visit to the Gary Bathing Beach Aquatorium and Bellaboo's Play and Discovery Center.

The program has received two applications so far.

Heather Zhang, a third-year business student, says costs were a big factor in her decision to sign up for the trip.

“It was dirt-cheap bro,” she said. “And it counts towards half a credit. So if I half-fail a class, I’m all set.”

The Abnormal School later uncovered that the second applicant hotgirlsinurarea73924 was actually a porn bot, and did not qualify for this exchange.
