Freak student reading during reading week

Edward Lander

For most students, reading week is a time to sit back, relax and unwind; but it appears not all care for this time-tested approach. One such student is Jackson Lang, a third-year Biology major who’s doing something very peculiar this reading week: reading.

Just when we thought we’d seen it all.

“It’s just such a great time to catch up on all the books I’ve been putting off,” said Lang. “I’m always so busy during the semester, so it's a nice break from my course texts.”

Lang is already 252 pages into a near-500 page novel and it's only Wednesday. If that’s not chilling enough– get this: Lang says he’s not reading just one book, but two.

“When I finish up Moby Dick I’m gonna start The Metamorphosis next,” he said. “I’m pretty psyched about it.”

According to the Literacy Foundation of Canada, the literary habits of university students plummet during reading weeks, making Lang a rare case.

Lang says he doesn’t see how this could be true. “I’ve been to the library twice this week and there were lots of people studying and reading there.”

The Abnormal School sent a reporter to verify Lang’s claim, but they declined, citing that theythey had better things to do during reading week than go to the library.
